What to do in Tenerife and the area |
|
|

Tenerife: Tenerife is just four hours and 15 minutes flying time from the UK.The Island is drenched in sunshine all year round. With its position off the coast of Morocco the yearly average temperature is around 23C. Although Tenerife is closer to Africa than Spain the atmosphere and the lifestyle is truly Spanish. Tenerife has two weather climates. The Island is separated by Mount Teide which is Spain’s highest mountain. The North of the Island is much cooler and is lush and green, while the South is more desert-like. Tenerife is the largest island of the archipelago. There are most varied landscapes: a mountain range with the mighty volcanic crater Canadas del Teide, with a diameter of 20 kilometers, and the 3.718 meters high Tiede in its center; extremely fertile valleys with important cultures of bananas and tomatoes; and a seaside offering as well beautiful steep coasts and wide beaches of sand. Visit Pico de Tiede which is Spains highest peak, it is also the world's third largest volcano. And yes, it's still active. The area surrounding Tiede was declared a Parque National in 1954. Because of the unique nature of the environment, extremely high altitude and low humidity the area around Tiede is home to a very specialised ecosystem of hardy flora and fauna adapted to survive in extreme conditions. Teleferico Tiede is a cable car company that will whisk you the elevated reaches of tiede, though not currently to the crater. The patter of thousands of tourist feet have over the years caused some erosion to the majestic Tiede. Restrictions are now in place to limit the number of visitors that tromp about the tip of Tiede including making it a bit harder to get there. Now if you wish to visit the top of Tiede you must first apply for a dated permission from:- Office of the National Park C/Emillo Calzadilla, no 5-4a plants Tel.922 290129/922 290183 Fax: 922 244788 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Main Resorts: In the South the main resorts are Playa de Las Americas and Los Christianos. Also the up and coming resort of Playa Paraiso and not forgetting the Costa del Silencio. Playa Americas is a really modern resort and playground with something for everyone, there is aphere. The beaches are really popular and the water sports here are brilliant. There is a free bus to the water park which the children must go to. After dark this is when Playa Americas comes to life with its many bars, restaurants, and clubs you are spoilt for choice. Los Christianos is very popular with families; the beach area is in a very sheltered bay and is great for the kids. The nearby harbour offers plenty of fishing and pleasure trips you can also catch the ferry to the island of La Gomera. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants in Christianos and every Sunday there is a huge market with hundreds of stalls. Playa Paraiso is an up and coming but secluded resort if you want to get away from it all. There is a small rocky beach with a lido nearby. Most of the hotels offer entertainment for all ages and will make you most welcome. Costa del Silencio has 2 first class golf courses if you fancy golf. The Costa del Silencio is a lovely area which has grown in popularity over the years. There are many nature trails here and the cliff top walk is stunning watch the sunset here it is fantastic. Urban planning control has restricted the height of buildings here and there are not many buildings over 3 storeys high. There is a beautiful rocky coastline at Amarila Bay snorkel and dive here in crystal clear water. Entertainment is put on in quite a few of the bars, for something special go to Flicks at Amarila Bay. The village of Las Galleatas is not far with its shops, bars and restaurants here there is a sandy/shingle beach great for surfing. Walk down the promenade with its speciality restaurants and you come to the beautiful harbour with its fish market. More Information: Santa Cruz is the capital city which has lots of history and heritage. If you fancy a change of scenery well you have certainly come to the right place. This picturesque village is located at the edge of an impressive steep coast.
La Laguna was the island's capital in former times, and has the most important University of Canary Islands. Though small in size, it has numerous monumental buildings and a tourist center with beautiful natural basins to offer.
In Candelaria , a well known place of pilgrimship, is located the church consecrated to the island's patroness, Basílica de la Virgen de la Candelaria.

Close to it there is the small village Los Realejos, with the island's oldest church and several monuments of interest more. | | Orotava is an extraordinarily nice town with manorial houses in the island's traditional style. Particularly well-known are the Casas de los Balcones, 17th century buildings with those typical balconies of Canarian pine-wood. The best time to visit Orotava is during the celebrations of Corpus Christi, when it is ornamented with innumerable flowers and the streets are covered with earths of six different colors which are found in the surroundings. The town is located in the really paradisiac valley Valle de la Orotava. When the peak of nearby Teide is still covered with snow flowers are in full bloom here. Scientist Alexander von Humboldt, after whom is named a viewpoint here, reported that he was on his knees in front of so much beauty when he visited Orotava. |
Rock Climbing and Bouldering in Tenerife Climbing on Tenerife has become more and more popular over the years, with many big climbers realising that you are guaranteed sunshine all year. And in the winter months when the rest of Europe is being drenched in rain, climbers can get some winter sunshine on the rocks. Tenerife has undergone some heavy redevelopments in the last few years, replacing all the old bolts, to make the routes safe and access to the crags a lot easier. There are now over 900 routes on the island, spread over 20 individual crags. The most spectacular of these are Canada del Capricho at the base of mount Tiede. Spectacular, spirals of volcanic rock, more than 300 feet high jut into the blue skies, making an ideal venue. The second best area is the superb Arico gorge, set in the mountains of Arico; it is the largest climbing area on the island, and home to Tenerife's hardest routes. Arico is a dried up river bed, layered with pine trees and huge boulders. The lower gorge was once quarried leaving huge overhanging walls up to 30 meters high and home to some of the hardest routes in Spain. The climbing on the island is suited for all grades of climbers. The easier walls of Aric upper and Tejina are well within the capabilities of even beginner climbers. And the lower walls of Arico are suited to the more experienced climbers. And if sport climbing isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of adventure routes in the mountains of the north. Around Tanganana and Roque Ambro are the best places in the north. The huge sea cliffs of Los Gigantes in the south are another good location for the more adventurous. They stand some 2000 feet from the sea and should only be challenged by very experienced climbers. Scuba Diving in Tenerife
